Vollmer: New optical shapemeter requires installation space of only 200 mm

The new Vollmer non-contact shape measurement system, VIP 08, measures the shape of strip in pickling lines, tension levellers, cut-to-length and slitting lines, and even in hot strip mills. It achieves an exceptionally high resolution thanks to up to 200 measuring zones distributed over the width of the product being measured. Vollmer will present the system for the first time at the Metec fair in Düsseldorf.

VIP 08 measures the true shape of the strip – like a shapemeter roll. It can handle strip speeds of up to 1,500 m/min and product widths of up to 3,000 mm. Unlike competitive systems, it can cope with specific strip tensions of up to 70 N/mm². Due to its compact design, VIP 08 requires a field of vision of only 200 mm in the direction of strip travel.

VIP 08 is Vollmer“s first shape system designed to also be used in hot rolling mills. It not only makes shape measurements of cold strip in pickling lines, tension levelers, slitting lines and cut-to-length lines, but also of plate and sheet products.

A special feature of VIP 08 is that it operates with up to 200 separate measuring zones distributed over the width of the product. This gives it an unusually high resolution for a shapemeter system. The measurement is based on a narrow, highly uniform band of diffuse light projected onto the strip by a standard mercury-vapour lamp and captured by a matrix camera. The system is available in two versions. In the dual-type version, the light source and the camera are arranged as separate units at an angle above the strip. This has the advantage that the space directly above the strip can be kept clear.

In the monoblock version, the optics of the system is compactly accommodated in a cross-beam arranged above the strip. The individual components are installed in an integrated unit. The Monoblock is supplied fully equipped and adjusted. If required, the system can be easily lifted up by a crane.

VIP 08 proved its worth for high-temperature applications over several months in a trial installation in a hot strip mill. Throughout this time it performed highly reliably also with high-temperature material and in the harsh operating environment prevailing in hot strip mills.

Vollmer will be at Metec 2011 in Düsseldorf: Hall 4, Stand D16

About Friedrich Vollmer GmbH

In 1963 Vollmer developed the world“s first thickness gauge capable of measuring the thickness of running strip in a cold rolling mill with an accuracy of some µm. The same year marked the beginnings of the company“s history. Vollmer was also a pioneer in realizing solutions for shape measurements on running strip.

Over the years, Vollmer developed different types of thickness gauges for strip (contact, isotopic and x-ray), roll measuring devices and shapemeters for strip. Meanwhile more than 1,000 thickness gauges and over 100 shapemeter systems have been installed in rolling mills. More than 100 roll grinding machines operate in conjunction with roll measuring systems from Vollmer. The company“s supply range is rounded off by services such as revamps of rolling mills including conversion to hydraulic screwdown systems, automatic gauge control (AGC) or automatic flatness control (AFC).

At its headquarters in Hagen, Vollmer employs some 100 people. Partners and subsidiaries in more than 30 countries take care of the company“s customers, ready to provide onsite service whenever needed.
