Standardized solutions in sensitive robotic assembly

Advanced Technology Solutions made by KUKA Systems

KUKA Systems GmbH is exhibiting this year at the international trade fair for production and assembly automation – Motek 2013 in Stuttgart. From 7 to 10 October, the system specialist will present its standardized solutions in sensitive robotic assembly at Booth 7125 in Hall 7.

KUKA Systems GmbH will demonstrate its special system expertise at this year“s Motek. As a proven automation specialist, the Augsburg company will show its innovative solutions for sensitive robotic assembly. As part of customer projects and development cooperations, KUKA Systems has established an engineering process with which slimmer and more flexible robot cells can be used to implement complex assembly processes. The company will be presenting examples of such applications at the international trade fair for production and assembly automation in Stuttgart.

The assembly application
Along with KUKA“s lightweight robots, these applications make use of force/travel sensors as well as simple image-processing sensors in order to create slim and flexible automation solutions. New engineering tools can take human-robot collaboration into account even at the system planning stage, thereby mapping out future shared workplaces for humans and robots in a cost-effective manner. Maximum cost-effectiveness will result from the best possible exploitation of their respective skills and the development of a suitable layout for the assembly cell/line.
Another central focus is mobile robotics. Here the automation specialist shows the ways in which the LBR iiwa can be put to use as a roving multi-tasker. A near-series concept featuring a sample application gives an impression of this. „With the LBR iiwa roving multi-tasker we demonstrate „spontaneous“ automation,“ says Henning Borkeloh, department manager for Advanced Technology Solutions at KUKA Systems. „An elegant solution and a simple way to offset peaks in the workload or to increase output in a flexible manner,“ continues Borkeloh.

KUKA Systems Advanced Technology Solutions
The Advanced Technology Solutions department at KUKA Systems concentrates on assembly solutions based on the lightweight robot (LBR iiwa) from KUKA Laboratories GmbH and human-robot collaboration, as well as on the small robots from KUKA Roboter GmbH and the intelligent use of sensors. The spectrum of flexible assembly applications extends from subassemblies to end products in the automotive industry and in general industry. Sensor-based robot guidance, mobile robotics and automated processes for the mass production of fiber composites complete the portfolio.

Robot-based sensitive assembly solutions are the answer to the production challenges of tomorrow. „The LBR iiwa makes completely new solutions in production technology possible. The robot“s integrated, high-performance, flexible sensor technology, along with its great freedom of movement due to its seven axes, allows it to perform assembly processes with the senses of a human,“ explains Hennig Borkeloh.
Manual activities, which until now have been neither ergonomic nor suitable for automation, can now be automated in a cost-effective way. Reproducible processes are performed at a high standard without the need for investments in dedicated equipment for specific models or components.
With these flexible robot cells, a first step into automation or an expansion of existing system concepts, even for complex assembly processes, is possible owing to the sensitive robots.
