Pilz – Your Partner for Risk Assessment

A series of changes and additions have recently been made to ISO/TR 14121-2 in order to adapt it to EN ISO 12100:2010. These changes concern all users who are involved in integrating safety into design and installation or modification of machinery. Pilz has been going beyond the scope of the new requirements for a long time with its risk assessment.

Changes to ISO/TR 14121-2

The following changes to ISO/TR 14121-2 (Second edition, 2012-06-01) are interesting for two reasons. First, an example of a risk matrix was included in TR 14121, which corresponds to the matrix used on ANSI B11.0. Second, it is arranged as a part of the risk analysis, that the risk estimation must be repeated to test the risk reduction measures‘ effectiveness.

Procedure for assessing the risk in all phases of the machine lifecycle

At Pilz we do more than just comply with the requirements of regulations and standards; we go a bit further to ensure that we offer our customers the best possible safety services. The standards require the risk from all hazards to be estimated based on a quantifiable procedure; an appropriate procedure is not specified, however. Pilz has developed a numerical procedure containing four parameters for this purpose. It enables in a precisely way the risk assessment in each phase of the machine’s lifecycle. Due to our internal processes we can guarantee that the quality of our workings is consistently high.

Pilz assesses the effectiveness of risk reduction

The need to assess the effectiveness of risk reduction methods has always been part of the Pilz risk assessment. Whenever Pilz made the initial risk assessment, we always assess the machine again to include the implemented risk reduction measures, then document the results for our customers. With customers who have existing, configured machinery, we can also carry out risk reduction measures even if the initial risk assessment was not performed by Pilz.
