Server cabinet doors support thermal management

Top conditioning for electronics

The hexagonal perforation of the Solvaro doors ensures that the interior of the cabinet stays cool.

Air conditioning is an important factor in data centres of all sizes. Strict separation of cool and warm flows of air is one feature of efficient design. Optimal heat dissipation is consequently a basic requirement for individual server cabinets. Solvaro, the manufacturer of metal components based in Kirchheim, specialises in the production of server cabinet doors which ensure good air conditioning in cabinets thanks to smart solutions.

Efficiency through the separation of cool and warm flows of air
High power consumption produces a lot of heat. These heat loads build up in data centres due to increasingly more powerful electronics. Regulation of heat loads is not just a challenge, but also a factor in operating costs. Manufacturers of server cabinets offer a range of air conditioning concepts which ensure efficient thermal management and consequently reduced operating costs. For the electronics to remain cool, there is often a consistent separation of cool air and warm air zones, not just in the entire room, but also directly in the server cabinet. The cabinets ideally provide a large air-permeable area without any loss in stability. Solvaro has been building on its expertise in server cabinet doors for many years. A free cross-section of 80% for the doors ensures that the interior of the cabinet does not overheat, brought about through hexagonal perforation. Utilising the mechanical advantages of honeycomb, this perforation ensures stability despite the extremely high air flow. The material’s inherent stability is preserved, and the doors thus remain extremely stable. Desired side effect: the perforation ensures that the equipment can still be seen when the door is closed. A carelessly tensioned cable can lead to air turbulence, with the result that the air flows are mixed in the cabinet.

Cooling, stability and design are factors for success
The key aspects that make the components successful are secure heat dissipation, high stability and the absolute flatness of the cut parts. „Especially in the case of an elaborate design, it is important that the cut parts are absolutely level,“ says Solvaro managing director, Gerhard Bullinger. To prevent any undesired tension in the sheet and thus buckling of the doors, the materials are systematically monitored. There are regular discussions with technicians from the rolling mill. The ability to find solutions, and go beyond the primary challenge, is greatly valued by customers. This also includes early collaboration in the development of components. „As a result, thanks to the lasering of external contours and the precise sparing of cut parts for mounting holes, hinges and door handles, a work step can often be saved on the manufacturer side,“ says Bullinger. The precisely laser-cut doors are now in use with Schroff, Tecnosteel and Emerson Network Power cabinets, among others.
