Long Life Despite Hot Acids and Bases

Assemblies made of special materials meet the requirements of the chemical industry

Long Life Despite Hot Acids and Bases

The pressure inside these heavy nitrogen containers – weighing 150 tonnes – can be up to 360 bar.

Highly resilient special steels stand out, for example, due to their high alloy components, such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum or even titanium, niobium, copper and tungsten, as well as due to their uniform structure. An innovative steel with the designation alform S580/820 M is being used for the first time in Europe for the penstock armouring and the distribution pipes of the Kaunertal power station. For technical reasons, the pipes are made of rolled steel plates up to 120 mm thick. The cylindrical pipe sections arise from welding the longitudinal joints. Then, round seams join two pipe sections into a pipe section that is 12,000 mm long. The welded joints and hence each of the more than 1,000 seams of the pipes consist of up to 35 layers and a total bead length of more than 240 kilometres. The extremely high precision plays a very important role here. With the high degree of automation and the precise heat treatment, Kremsmueller achieves an error rate of zero. This was the appraisal of the result by engineer Rainer Maldet, responsible at TIWAG Tiroler Wasserkraft AG for the Kaunertal Project: „Kremsmueller has not just met, but exceeded our expectations. This must be thanks to Kremsmueller“s exemplary investments in machine tools and submerged-arc welding machines as well as the outstandingly qualified employees.

Kremsmueller now also has a Competence Centre for processing special materials, such as the ones that occur particularly in chemical process engineering and in other sectors with aggressive and hot media. Examples of successful applications are chemical and pressure reactors as well as heat exchangers made of pure titanium. For these applications, the company is a quality leader in all of Europe. This also includes thick-walled apparatuses, which are plated on the inside with special materials to counter the high pressure stress and particularly aggressive media. Apparatuses manufactured in-house from these raw materials can weigh up to 400 tonnes. Kremsmueller develops the required manufacturing technologies and agrees on their application with its customers as well as with their technology partners.

The family-owned enterprise, founded in 1961 and having its head office in the Upper Austrian town of Steinhaus near Wels is a complete provider for industrial plant construction. The core competences include piping, pipeline and tank construction, installation as well as instrumentation and control technology. The Kremsmueller Group has its own subsidiaries in seven countries, an employee strength of about 2,400 and in the year 2014, achieved a turnover of more than 230 million Euro. In this family-run group, foresight across generations has priority above short-term profit expectations as regards the planning and implementation of investment processes. Social responsibility, preservation of natural resources and the maximum possible independence from the financial markets characterise the management strategy.
